Spiritual Development and Mediumship: Why Healing Begins Within

By Donna King

You can feel drawn to the spirit world and still find yourself tired, overwhelmed or unsure of what you need. You can care deeply for others while quietly losing touch with yourself.

Over recent months, I have spent a great deal of time reflecting on my own journey, the experiences I have lived through and the lessons I feel spirit continues to place before me. One understanding keeps returning: honouring ourselves belongs at the heart of spiritual development.

This has shaped the way I approach mediumship, spiritual teaching and trance art healing. Whatever form our spiritual path takes, there must be room for the person walking it.

What does it mean to honour yourself?

From a young age, many of us learn to put other people’s comfort first. We stay quiet to avoid judgement, hide our feelings to keep the peace or continue giving when we have very little left.

Over time, it can become difficult to recognise where kindness ends and neglecting our own needs begins.

Honouring yourself might mean speaking honestly, allowing yourself to cry, resting without having to earn it or saying “no” to something you do not have the capacity to take on. Sometimes it means stepping away from a situation that asks you to become smaller in order to belong.

In this context, when I speak about healing, I mean making space for self-understanding, compassion and spiritual connection. It is a personal process, with no deadline and no requirement to feel positive all the time.

Why self-awareness matters in mediumship development

Within my spiritual practice, I understand mediumship as communication with the spirit world. Developing that work also asks us to become more aware of ourselves: our thoughts, emotions, expectations and the way we interpret what we perceive.

If you are exploring mediumship development, it is natural to wonder, “Am I receiving something?” or “Am I imagining this?” Those questions deserve patience and honest exploration.

Before trying to interpret every feeling, it can help to notice how you are arriving that day. Are you settled? Distracted? Hoping for a particular experience? Feeling pressure to get something right?

For me, this is where self-awareness becomes valuable. It encourages us to observe our experiences carefully and leave room for uncertainty, rather than immediately giving every impression a spiritual meaning.

You do not have to resolve every personal difficulty before exploring mediumship. But your own needs deserve a place in that development. Sensitivity does not create an obligation to be constantly available to others.

Boundaries, sensitivity and spiritual growth

People who describe themselves as empaths or sensitive souls may recognise how strongly they respond to the atmosphere around them. A difficult conversation can stay with us. Someone else’s distress can occupy our thoughts long after we have gone home.

Whatever language we use for that sensitivity, it is worth noticing how much we are asking ourselves to carry.

A boundary might be as simple as leaving time between commitments, explaining that you cannot talk right now or choosing a quiet evening after a demanding day.

If you are unsure where to begin, try asking yourself:

  • What am I feeling before I turn my attention to anyone else?

  • What have I agreed to because I felt guilty about saying no?

  • What would giving myself a little more space look like today?

There is no need to force an answer. These questions are an invitation to listen.

Sometimes the most meaningful step in spiritual growth is an ordinary one: recognising that you are tired and allowing yourself to rest.

What is trance art healing?

Trance art healing is an area of my work that I feel especially passionate about.

In my practice, I describe trance art as a spiritual process in which I allow what I experience as spirit and energy to guide the artwork. Colours, shapes, images and impressions emerge, and I explore the meaning they may hold.

Each piece is individual. Its significance may feel immediate, or it may become something a person returns to and reflects upon over time.

What interests me is the space an image can open for someone. A colour may bring a memory to mind. A shape may invite a feeling that is difficult to describe. An unfamiliar image may encourage a new question.

I approach this as a personal, spiritual experience. The meaning belongs partly to the person receiving the artwork; there is room for their own response, including when something does not resonate.

How does trance art healing work in my practice?

People often ask how trance healing works, particularly when it is expressed through art.

My understanding is rooted in my spiritual beliefs and experience. I see the artwork as a focus for connection and reflection, with the possibility of finding comfort, personal meaning or a sense of inner stillness.

I do not believe an image has to be understood all at once. Nor does every colour have to carry one fixed meaning for everyone. Your memories, associations and feelings matter.

Alongside selected pieces of healing artwork, I will also be offering intuitive written readings and spiritual interpretations. These will share the impressions I associate with the work while leaving space for the individual’s own understanding.

There is no particular response someone has to have for their experience to be valid.

Online spiritual development courses: space to explore

These reflections are helping shape my online spiritual development day courses. My intention is to create a supportive environment where people can ask questions, explore their awareness and learn without feeling they have to perform.

The courses will bring together:

  • Spiritual and intuitive development.

  • Mediumship discussion and open spiritual conversation.

  • Energy awareness and personal reflection.

  • Self-understanding, boundaries and personal empowerment.

  • Trance art healing and intuitive interpretation.

Authenticity, gentleness and openness are at the heart of what I want to offer. My hope is that these spaces will encourage people to recognise their individuality and approach their development with curiosity.

If this approach speaks to you, you are welcome to explore my work and get in touch about upcoming online courses, trance art healing and intuitive written readings through DonnaKingMedium.com.

Making space for your own inner voice

I believe many people are looking for somewhere they can bring their questions, their sensitivity and their whole selves.

My hope is that through teaching, artwork and spiritual conversation, I can help create that space.

Honouring yourself is not selfish. To me, it is sacred.

Sometimes healing begins with one quiet moment of honesty: acknowledging what you feel, recognising what you need and giving yourself permission to listen.
